Healthy Pet Care Tips

What is a dog-friendly breakfast?

Many, but not all, human foods are safe for dogs to eat including a number of breakfast foods. Below we list a few safe breakfast foods for dogs and those that should be avoided. Always consult your veterinarian before feeding your dog any new food.

What can dogs eat for breakfast?

Green beans and Peas: Peas and green beans both have high levels of mineral potassium, and green beans are a good source of vitamins K and C. Each is a healthy source of nutrition and have few calories.

Apples: Apples are a great fruit to eat because they are rich in vitamins C and A. It's best to feed your dog only a few apple slices at a time, without the core or the seeds.

Pasta and Rice: White or whole wheat pasta is a fantastic source of both energy and nutrients. However, sauces high in acidity or fat should be avoided.

Sweet potatoes and Pumpkin: They both aid in digestion and provide your dog with a wealth of vitamin A and beta-carotene.

Salmon: A great source of omega-3 fats, which are beneficial to the skin and coat of your dog.

Lean Proteins: Beef, turkey, and chicken are examples of lean proteins. However, give them food that is devoid of any strong flavors, such as those found in wine, oil, seasonings, or vegetables.

Yogurt: Greek yogurt is an excellent source of protein. However, stay away from the sugary and preservative-laden options.

Peanut Butter: Offers a good amount of protein and fiber, but those with xylitol, a poison to dogs, should be avoided.

What should dogs avoid eating for breakfast?

There are plenty of foods you should avoid giving your dogs for breakfast. Above all, these include anything with xylitol in them, such as some brands of peanut butter and chewing gum, as xylitol is poisonous to dogs. Other foods you should generally avoid include:

  • Mushrooms
  • Green unripe potatoes and tomatoes
  • Corncobs
  • Fruit seeds
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Currants
  • Sultanas
  • Raisins
  • Grapes
  • Yeast dough
  • Avocado
  • Coffee products
  • Chocolate

It's always a good idea to consult your veterinarian first if you plan to feed your dog something other than dog food.

What are some fun human foods and meals dogs can eat?

If you want to treat your dog to a nice breakfast every once in a while, here are some fun meals you can try out:

A Spinach Omelette

One of the healthiest human meals you can feed your dog is a spinach omelet. Spinach provides your dog with fiber, which can help him maintain a healthy weight. Just limit yourself to one egg or a few egg whites at a time.

A Yogurt & Banana Parfait

Yogurt is high in protein and calcium, and bananas are high in electrolytes, potassium, and fiber. Larger dogs can consume 6 ounces of plain, low-fat yogurt, while smaller breeds should only consume 3 ounces. You can also give them one as a post-playtime snack.

Scrambled Eggs

Scrambled eggs are a high-protein source for dogs. They can eat them as long as they're fully cooked. We suggest making your scrambled eggs with a small amount of olive oil. Then simply serve them to your dog with plain, cooked grains and vegetables on the side.

Unsalted & Butter-Free Popcorn

This treat provides your dog with a good source of phosphorous, magnesium, and calcium. Just don't add any butter or salt to your dog's portion. Also, make sure to remove any unpopped kernels.
