Overnight ER Technician Assistant
Position Overview:
The veterinary assistant provides support to the veterinarians and technicians in their daily tasks by maintaining the cleanliness of the treatment areas including cages, exam rooms and procedure spaces, restraining and handling patients, feeding and walking patients, operating lab equipment, taking x-rays, as well as clerical and administrative work. They deliver quality care for all patients and provide exceptional service.
Essential Functions:
- Offer compassionate care to all patients and exhibiting positive communication with clients.
- Greet patients and owners, escort to exam rooms, and take vital signs.
- Exhibit established skillset in patient handling and restraint to provide LVTs assistive support during: exams, medication administration, treatments, placement to perform radiographs, calm anxious patients, and all other duties assigned by LVTs and doctors. Operate and maintain hospital equipment (EKG, pumps, scales, anesthetic monitors, etc.).
- Fill prescriptions, feed patients as prescribed; monitor appetite and report abnormal behaviors to LVTs.
- Quickly comprehend and execute directions from doctors and LVTs, ensuring respectful clear communication for entirety of shift.
- Maintain the cleanliness of the hospital each day; clean equipment, kennels, and facilities using chemicals and supplies; ensure the safe use of chemicals; complete laundry
Overnight Assistant Role:
In addition to the essential duties, the overnight position includes the following responsibilties, as well as expectation to perform any other duties as assigned by LVTs or doctors.
- Exhibit exceptional customer service etiquette serving as a client service representative during overnight hours to perform tasks including, but not limited to, greet emergency clients, answer phones, handle check-in/check-out.
- Support technicians with feeding and walking patients.
- Clean patient cages, treatment areas, exam rooms, etc.
- Operate lab equipment for preparation and process of diagnostic sample submissions.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- One or more years' experience in a veterinary environment successfully performing all of the duties of this position is strongly preferred.
- Experience with animal handling, radiology, and client relations is strongly preferred.
- May consider an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience.
Position Requirements:
- Maintains current knowledge in the field of expertise and actively seeks opportunities for continuing education and skill improvement.
- Proficiency in safely controlling and restraining animals.
- Aware and able to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
- Requires knowledge of hospital procedures, policies, and services; client and patient treatment protocols; hospital computer systems; and the standard procedures, records, and terminology used in a veterinary hospital.
- Depending on the functional area of assignment, tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation and/or extended periods of time standing and/or walking.
- This is a strenuous job that requires a lot of lifting, cleaning, and constant motion. May involve some climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
- Some tasks involve the periodic performance of moderately physically demanding work, usually involving lifting or carrying moderately heavy animals (up to 50 pounds).
- Must be flexible with scheduling and able to work some weekends and holidays.
