Position Overview

Hagyard Equine Medical Institute is seeking a compassionate, organized, and customer focused Surgery Barn Admissions & Barn Crew to join our Surgery Barn Team. This is a first point of contact for many of our clients and plays an essential role in ensuring smooth arrivals and departures. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in a fast-paced veterinary environment, enjoys helping people, and has ample experience handling horses.  

Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Kentucky, is an internationally recognized leader in equine medicine, combining cutting-edge technology with a collaborative team dedicated to advancing equine health and performance.

Key Duties and Expectations:

  • Have excellent customer service, communication and horse handling skills.
  • Be attentive to trailers arriving, greet clients promptly and care for their needs.
  • Safely load and unload horses from trailers
  • Checking horses in and out of the hospital which includes (but is not limited to):
    • Correctly and accurately document patient information and contact information
    • Placing the patient in the correct and clean location
    • Administrative responsibilities such as creating charts and correctly imputing patients into the system
    • Effectively and promptly communicating any questions, comments, or concerns to the appropriate doctor or member of staff
  • Provide clients with necessary information regarding hospital procedures, policies, and expectations (i.e. visiting times, biosecurity policies, admission and discharge procedure)
  • Maintain a knowledge of the hospital layout to direct clients appropriately.
  • Remain calm and professional during emergencies and other high stress situations.
  • Ensure patients’ belongings are accounted for upon admission and discharge
  • Working with all staff to ensure discharges and/or medications going home with the patient are organized appropriately upon discharge
  • Ensure outpatients are monitored and communicate effectively with hospital staff about patient status and needs.
  • Ensuring admission and discharge materials (i.e. lead ropes, white boards) are clean and organized
  • Perform husbandry needs (feeding, watering, cleaning stalls)
  • Assisting with cleaning, bedding, and disinfecting stalls
  • Keeping the barn clean and organized
  • Keeping hay and straw barn tidy
  • Operating a tractor
  • Mow fields and operate a weed eater
  • Assist with general maintenance
  • Perform any other duties as assigned to support the hospital, surgery barn, and patient care team.

Qualifications (Required)

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older to be considered for this position
  • Equine handling and restraint
  • Comfortability with horses
  • Excellent communication and people skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to multitask
  • Basic computer skills
  • Comfortable working with clients who may be experiencing emotional situations
  • Ability to work as a team.
  • Professional, dependable, and a positive attitude.
  • Ability to safely handle all ages, breeds and sizes of horses.
  • Familiarity with operating a tractor and lawn mower
  • Experience cleaning stalls
  • Ability to monitor horses for signs of colic
  • Be able to lift 100lbs.

Preferred Skills (Nice to Have)

  • Previous experience in veterinary medicine, or equine care preferred.
  • Equine trailering experience is strongly preferred. 

Schedule: Tuesday-Saturday from 7am-4pm, overtime as needed

Pay Range

$16—$16 USD
