Position Overview

  • The Veterinary Pharmacy Technician is responsible for preparing, dispensing, and managing medications for animal patients under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian. This role supports the medical team by ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in all pharmacy-related tasks while maintaining a high standard of patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and dispense medications as prescribed by veterinarians
  • Accurately calculate dosages based on species, weight, and condition
  • Maintain and manage pharmacy inventory, including ordering, stocking, and tracking expiration dates
  • Ensure proper labeling and packaging of all medications
  • Provide clear instructions to clients on medication administration
  • Maintain detailed and accurate medical and prescription records
  • Comply with all federal, state, and DEA regulations regarding controlled substances
  • Assist veterinarians and technicians with medication-related questions and treatment plans
  • Handle prescription refills and communicate with clients regarding medication needs
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the pharmacy area
  • Identify and report discrepancies or concerns related to medications or inventory

Qualifications (Required)

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required)
  • Veterinary assisting or pharmacy technician experience
  • Knowledge of veterinary pharmacology and common medications
  • Strong math and calculation skills
  • Attention to detail and high level of accuracy
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication and client service skills
  • Familiarity with veterinary software systems preferred

Preferred Skills (Nice to Have)

  • Knowledge of veterinary pharmacology and common medications.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Capability to lift and restrain animals as needed (with assistance when appropriate)
  • Manual dexterity for handling medications and equipment

Work Environment:

  • Veterinary hospital
  • Exposure to animals, including those that may be stressed or in pain
  • Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases and hazardous materials (with proper safety protocols)

Schedule:

  • Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays

  • Mondays, Tuesdays and afternoons for Wednesday-Friday

     

  • Wednesday-Friday shifts are flexible and can be determined based on availability
