Position Overview
Join our team as a Barn and Recovery Technician who assists the patient with all aspects of surgical recovery.
Bluegrass Equine Surgery (BES) in Versailles, Kentucky, is an equine veterinary practice providing exceptional client service and primary medical care in the central Kentucky region. We are building a driven, supportive, and diverse team.
Hours: Friday/Saturday 7am to 7pm. 24 Hours/week
Reports to: Surgery Ops Manager, Hospital Manager

The BES Part Time Barn Technician assists with patient care from time of arrival to time of departure
DUTIES
- Medical
- Assist in unloading and loading of patients from trailer
- Admit and discharge patients
- Monitor hospitalized and surgery patients
- Monitor all post-op meds and bandaging
- Communicate with Surgery Ops Manager, HM, doctors
- Restrain patients as needed
- Take vital measurements on patients
- Assist in dropping/recovering horses from anesthesia
- Interact with clients at drop off/pick up
- Take patients outside when needed, jog horses for lameness exams
- Assist holding and plating for x-rays
- Hold and restrain horses in scintigraphy barn
- Clean stalls, hay and water horses routinely
- Help keep barn and surgery area clean
- Model professionalism and ethical practices

- Promote cooperative working environment among staff members; understand the value of teamwork; show enthusiasm and willingness to perform as necessary to help the practice function as a unit
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions
- Promotes continuous quality improvement
- Performs other duties as assigned
EXPERIENCE
- Understanding of equine veterinary practices
- Ability to read horse body language and perform advanced handling of horses and foals
- Experience restraining horses of all ages
- Self-motivated lifelong learner
- Works well independently and as part of a team
- Ability to drive a tractor a positive
- Familiarity with the Thoroughbred equine industry is preferred
- Experience on an equine horse farm or equine veterinary practice is preferred
PERSONAL
- Feel and express a genuine liking for animals and for working in an animal-care environment.
- Work under the broad general administrative supervision of the owners and doctors, and use sound personal judgment in selecting methods, establishing priorities, and arriving at conclusions
- May be required to work uncommon hours, overtime, and be subject to recall in emergency situations
- Be flexible in attitude and work habits
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds
