Position Overview

Carolina Veterinary Specialists is looking for a qualified Veterinary Technician (or assistant) to join our Specialty departments at the Matthews clinic. The schedule is a 5-day work week from 8am to 4pm. You will work with all the Specialty services when there is a need.

What is Specialty Floater?

A specialty floater would be a team player willing to work with all departments. The departments would include Surgery, Neurology, Internal medicine, Cardiology, Medical Oncology and Radiation Oncology. A floater would work with the teams and be part of the team they are working with. You will assist both the Doctors and support staff in their day to day functions. You would be training in all aspects of each service.

What does the Specialty Floater do?

The Specialty Floater technician/assistant assists our board-certified Doctors with all aspects of day to day function. It would including seeing routine and sick appointments, performing diagnostics, completing blood work for patients, accurate and precise venipuncture skills, patient examination and restraint, administering and monitoring anesthesia in the pre-, peri-, and post-operative periods, discharging patients from the hospital, and client communications.

Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Take accurate history for patients
  • Client Communication according to hospital policy
  • Oversee and approve as necessary, appointment schedule and emergency add-on patients
  • Ability to perform safe, accurate drug calculations
  • Appropriately restrain patients for examinations, procedures and blood draws
  • Proactive role in patient hospitalization and treatment procedures
  • Properly prep and scrub patients for sterile procedures
  • Maintain anesthesia for all procedures requiring it
  • Monitor patient parameters and notify doctor of potential concerns
  • Particular ability to provide patient and compassionate nursing care for debilitated patients
  • Set up constant rate infusions (CRI)
  • Acquisition of imaging including radiographs and computed tomography (CT)
  • Set up and assist with endoscopic procedures.
  • Maintain the efficiency of the service by utilizing time management skills to recognize and complete tasks in a timely manner
  • Ability to be particularly compassionate and patient with clients experiencing grief

What does this job require?

The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills as well as a keen attention to detail. The Specialty Floater will be able to work well as part of a team and will demonstrate a shared sense of responsibility among the different services within the hospital. They will also possess the following qualifications:

  • Ability to work both independently with little supervision as well as part of a team
  • Strong work ethic and good organizational and multi-tasking skills
  • Capability to lift 50 pounds

Additional Desired Competencies:

  • At least 1+ year of experience as a technician or assistant
  • Working knowledge of standard veterinary medications
  • Strong technical skills including phlebotomy, catheter placement, general laboratory, anesthesia and pharmacology skills
  • Knowledge of normal patient parameters
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Ability to administer and knowledge of medication and fluid therapies
  • Knowledge of critical nursing care and steps to take in the event of patient compromise
  • Ability to administer safe and appropriate fluid therapy
  • Ability to monitor anesthesia safely
  • Credential technician preferred

Job Type: Full-time

Schedule: Monday through Friday from 8am to 4pm

Pay Range
$18$32 USD
