Position Overview

Join our team as a Surgery Barn Supervisor who supervises and coordinates the daily activities of the barn crew, horse handlers, recovery personnel, and assistants/technicians in the Surgery Barns including patient care and facility maintenance.

Essential Functions:

  • Patient Care Management
    • Ensure patients receive proper care in accordance with doctors’ instructions and in a manner consistent with medical standards.
    • Monitor/oversee patient status, treatment plans, medication dosage, administration of medication, patient physicals etc.
    • Oversee and participate in patient rounds.
    • Ensure biosecurity protocols are being followed as outlined in biosecurity manual and participate in any necessary meetings. Coordinate with and oversee IDC Coordinator and participate in salmonella surveillance when necessary.
    • Ensure patient care concerns/needs are professionally, promptly and appropriately communicated between assistants/technicians, interns, doctors, and any other appropriate parties as necessary.
    • Work with various departments (i.e. medicine, pharmacy, imaging etc.) as necessary to coordinate hospital patient care needs.
    • Oversee that the admissions and discharge of patients are accurately documented and communicated to the appropriate parties.
    • Oversee that upon discharge, patients are clean, bandages are fresh, necessary paperwork has been completed, and that any items needing to leave with the patients (blankets, halters, medicines, etc.) are in order for the client to receive.
    • Assist team in all functions of the surgery barn and allocate employees appropriately to help fulfill barn roles as required. This may include personally filling in as necessary to assist with duties such as patient care/taking patients as required, performing admissions/dispatch.
  • Client Care Management
    • Ensure that staff establish and maintain a professional rapport with clients to enhance the client service experience.
    • Ensure appropriate, professional and confidential communication between clients and staff regarding patient care is maintained.
    • Expedite the resolution of client problems/complaints to the appropriate person(s).
  • Personnel Management
    • Scheduling:
      • Create and manage work schedule for all barn staff.
      • Coordinates proper staffing levels of seasonal and year-round barn staff for all shifts.
      • Ensures that employees responsibilities, conduct/professionalism and attendance are upheld and maintained at all times.
      • Communicate staffing needs, changes and concerns to the Surgery Manager and/or the Human Resource Manager.
    • Training:
      • Coordinate and oversee training of all barn personnel with regards to proper protocols, patient care, horse handling, machinery, and equipment usage (i.e. Oxygen), etc.
      • Ensure staff are performing their duties efficiently and of a quality standard.
      • Create and maintain training handbooks, instructions and other necessary training materials.
      • Work with Senior Lead Technicians/Assistants to maintain and create training schedules, materials and other items necessary for training staff.
    • Management:
      • Oversee employee attendance, conduct and performance.
      • Maintain open and consistent communication with staff and Senior Lead Technicians/Assistants to review staff performance, conduct and attendance.
      • Coordinates review meetings with staff to review performance. This may include the Surgery Manager when necessary.
      • Oversee employee safety.
      • Communicate and participate in the resolution of employee issues with Surgery Manager and/or Human Resource Manager as necessary to maintain employee standards.
      • Attend and participate in staff and/or supervisor meetings as required.
  • Facility Management
    • Oversee daily and coordinates cleaning and maintenance of barns to provide a safe and sanitary environment for all patients. Areas include but are not limited to: stalls, feeding rooms and equipment, aisle ways and carts, horse paths, treatment rooms, dispatch offices etc..
    • Ensure stall and barn cleaning protocol and infectious disease protocol are adhered to and maintained at all times.
    • Maintain accountability for area inventory, including but not limited to, stock levels, expired medications and waste management.

Qualifications:

  • Previous Equine Veterinary Technician/Assistant experience required
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and the Equine/Thoroughbred industries required
  • Minimum of 2 years of management and/or supervisory experience preferred
  • Associate or bachelor’s in Equine Science/Studies, or Veterinary Technician license preferred, but not required
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office programs
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding employees, clients, doctors, and patients
  • Self-motivated with the ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Strong teamwork and leadership skills with a positive, solutions-focused attitude
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clients, staff, doctors, and management
  • Strong organizational, multitasking, and problem-solving abilities
  • Commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness, patient care, and customer service
  • Ability to guide and support staff in following procedures and protocols
  • Ability to read and interpret documents and safety information
  • Ability to work outdoors and around livestock, machinery, chemicals, and varying environmental conditions
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and perform physical tasks throughout the workday
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and more than 100 pounds occasionally
  • Strong visual abilities, including close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment

Schedule: Primarily Monday through Friday, 8AM to 4PM. Some overtime may be required.
