Barn Assistant – Equine Veterinary Hospital
Location:
Position Type: Full-Time
Schedule: May include evenings, weekends, overtime, and on-call shifts
About the Role
Our Equine Veterinary Hospital is seeking a dedicated and skilled Barn Assistant to support daily barn and surgical operations. This role is essential in maintaining a safe, clean, and efficient environment for our patients and team. The ideal candidate has strong experience handling horses, communicates well, and thrives in a fast-paced, team-oriented setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Admit patients and assist with daily patient intake.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of barn, patient, and surgical support areas.
- Safely restrain and handle horses and foals for exams and procedures.
- Assist with wound care, including cleaning, scrubbing, rinsing, and supporting bandage application.
- Perform barn tech duties including monitoring bandages and reporting concerns.
- Hand-graze or exercise patients as needed.
- Feed and assist with general care of hospitalized patients.
- Communicate effectively with veterinarians, the Practice Manager, and team members.
- Promote professionalism, teamwork, and a positive work environment.
- Follow written and verbal instructions accurately.
- Support quality improvement initiatives and perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications (Required)
- Advanced equine handling skills; able to read horse body language with confidence.
- Experience working in an equine veterinary or horse-care environment preferred.
- Self-motivated and willing to learn; able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Comfortable working in a physical, animal-care environment.
- Flexible with schedule and able to work uncommon hours or respond to emergencies.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
