Veterinary Technician

Summary: This position is the veterinarians’ primary medical support. They assist the doctor throughout the examination, diagnosis, treatment and discharge. They aid the veterinarians in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work and administrative detail. The Veterinary Assistant must enjoy working with horses and is able to deal with them when they are stressed, ill or in pain. They must stay calm and efficient during a medical crisis.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Veterinary technician must have a broad knowledge of horses. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Administer medications and fluids, and carryout medical treatments as directed by the attending veterinarian
  • Emergency preparations and workup for incoming patients
  • Being able to competently handle horses
  • Ability to appropriately restrain a sedated horse
  • Clean stalls and perform other maintenance tasks to assure a clean hospital environment
  • Follow feeding and watering schedules as instructed by attending veterinarian
  • Provide bathing and grooming for hospitalized patients as needed

Performance Expectations: Includes but are not limited to:

  • Be dependable and punctual on working hours scheduled and to be willing to stay beyond scheduled hours if needed.
  • Maintain a professional appearance while at work including arriving in a clean uniform
  • Assist in achieving and maintaining high quality standards in patient care and in the appearance and cleanliness of the facility
  • Conduct oneself professionally as a representative of the Clinic, refraining from inappropriate language and behavior
  • Constructively communicate problems (procedures, working environment, patients, clients) to management
  • Assist other employees as needed. Avoid waiting for co-worker to ask for help
  • Participate in all staff and training meetings
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding clients and patients

Qualifications: Minimum age requirement of 18 years old. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education/Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) at a minimum.

Reasoning Ability: Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Must be able to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills: Proficient in the use of email, word-processing software, and practice management software.

Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to visible blood and tissue, occasional toxic chemicals and fumes, and radiation. Position also requires being able to work:

Regularly:

  • In hot, wet and/or humid conditions
  • Near moving mechanical parts
  • Around fumes or airborne particles
  • Around toxic or caustic chemicals
  • Outdoors regardless of weather condition
  • With the risk of radiation

Physical Demands: MUST be able to handle fractious horses, lift feedbags and water buckets, and push a full wheelbarrow. Other physical demands of the position requires being able to work:

Regularly:

  • While standing for long periods
  • Walking
  • Reach with hands and arms
  • Lift 25 pounds of weight
  • Climb or balance

Occasionally:

  • Work while stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling
  • Lift 50 pounds of weight
Pay Range
$14$18 USD
