Senior Network Engineer (Remote)

Position Overview
The Senior Network Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, security, optimization, and ongoing support of PetVet Care Centers’ enterprise network infrastructure across a nationwide portfolio of specialty and general practice veterinary hospitals. Reporting to the Director of IT Operations, this role serves as the senior technical authority for network architecture and connectivity strategy. The position ensures high availability, performance, and security of all network environments supporting clinical systems, imaging platforms, practice management systems (PIMS), telephony, and cloud-based applications. This role combines hands-on engineering expertise with strategic infrastructure planning in a fast-paced, multi-site healthcare environment.
Scope of Responsibility
- Enterprise-wide network architecture and standards
- Multi-site WAN/LAN design across 400+ locations
- Network security and segmentation
- Cloud networking
- Firewall and VPN strategy
- Remote connectivity solutions
- Network monitoring and performance management
- Technical escalation point for complex network incidents
- Collaboration with Security, Infrastructure, and Application teams
Key Responsibilities
Network Architecture & Engineering
- Design and maintain scalable WAN/LAN architecture for multi-location healthcare operations
- Engineer secure site-to-site connectivity
- Create and enforce enterprise network standards and configurations
- Evaluate and recommend new technologies to support growth and acquisition activity
Network Operations & Reliability
- Serve as Tier III escalation point for critical network incidents
- Lead root cause analysis for outages and performance degradation
- Ensure uptime and resilience of mission-critical hospital connectivity
- Oversee proactive monitoring tools and performance metrics
- Manage firmware updates, patching cycles, and lifecycle planning
Security & Compliance
- Implement and maintain firewall policies and intrusion prevention systems
- Support vulnerability remediation and security hardening initiatives
- Partner with cybersecurity teams on threat detection and response
- Ensure network infrastructure aligns with healthcare data protection standards and compliance requirements
- Support disaster recovery and business continuity planning
Project Leadership
- Lead network components of acquisition onboarding and hospital integrations
- Architect network solutions for new hospital builds and expansions
- Manage vendor relationships
- Participate in budgeting and capital planning for infrastructure investments
- Provide technical documentation and executive-level reporting as required
Leadership & Collaboration
- Collaborate closely with the Director of IT Operations on infrastructure strategy
- Partner with Systems Engineers, Security teams, and IT Support leadership
- Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior network or infrastructure staff
- Translate technical architecture decisions into business-impact terms for leadership
Qualifications (Required)
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Network Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 4+ years of progressive network engineering experience
- 2+ years in enterprise, multi-site network environments
- Advanced experience with:
- Enterprise firewalls
- Routing and switching
- VPN and remote access technologies
- Network monitoring tools
- Strong understanding of network security principles
Preferred Skills (Nice to Have)
- Experience in healthcare or veterinary multi-site environments
- Experience supporting acquisition integration and rapid site onboarding
- Cloud networking expertise (Azure/AWS)
- Certifications such as:
- CCNP or CCIE
- Fortinet NSE
- Palo Alto PCNSE
- AWS or Azure networking certifications
